Timothy Gantz, Early Greek Myth: A Guide to Literary and Artistic Sources (1993)

This web site has the purpose of supplementing Timothy Gantz’s Early Greek Myth: A Guide to Literary and Artistic Sources (1993; to purchase the paperback edition, see  vol. 1 and vol. 2; for the original, single volume edition, see the Internet Archive). This encyclopedic reference is the only comprehensive handbook of its kind in English, and it has become a starting-point for any research on early Greek myths.

The site currently contains supplementary materials for all the chapters, i.e. Chapters 1-18. Please note that the site is a work in progress. Both the literary and artistic sources for Chapters 1-5, 9, 10, and 16-18 are currently finished, as are the literary sources for Chapters 7-8, 12, 14, and part of 13. Some artistic sources for Chapters 6-8 and 11-15 are also up, although additional images and links will be provided for these art works.

We welcome any suggestions, corrections or offers of assistance, particularly in the realm of translating literary fragments in Greek and Latin that are cited in Early Greek Myth and not previously translated.

We would like to honor R. Ross Holloway, our dear departed friend and collaborator, who most generously contributed his expertise, energy and time to finding and posting illustrations of art works from nearly all the chapters on this site. Without his encouragement, work on the site might have stalled, but he made the project seem both valuable and doable.
